LAST February 24, 2014
REPORTED BY Arjay Gever

We Shall Return
The team of eight passionate hearts arrived (4pm) at the city of Tacloban last Monday February 17, 2014. The beauty of the city is still evident, even with its scars still fresh made by the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippine archipelago last November of 2013.
Our 18 hour trip was paid off with mixed emotions, stunned and dazzled seeing the extent of the damage made by the typhoon. I had a quick thought asking myself “if this devastation happened in my city I don’t know what to do.” After we docked from the port of Ormoc Leyte passing through the towns and the cities of the province, there seeing houses, buildings, and even lives crumpled like paper, it’s as if there is no hope. You can’t imagine a typhoon so strong enough to crash an infrastructure like it’s just made out of sand.
But with us the zeal of hope found in Christ Jesus we carried on, with the motivation for the cause to minister and lead people to Jesus, it’s our strength. The sun is setting when Kuya Rey fetched us infront of Robinsons Tacloban.
With a smile on his face he said “maopaynakulop” a waray-waray term for good afternoon.
We then jumped into the red mini pick-up car, carrying some goods to be repacked as we are to proceed to the adopted Barangay 54-A, that His Life Ministries chose to be the recipient of the free roofing materials to be given to the affected families of the Barangay [an entire barangay].
The warm welcome of the people when we arrived at Bible Baptist Church the host church and command center for the distributions of the materials, at least picked some of the thorns pierced in our hearts as it was saddened by the sight we witnessed along the way.
Pastor Jun Canas who pastors the church greeted us together with his wife and some little kids who seem to be expectant in our arrival. To regain our strength they’ve prepared a pamahaw for us, as the day is not yet done for us. New relationships has been established whereas hte exchange of conversation starting to build a good rapport for us and our brothers and sisters in Christ in Tacloban, our Filipino culture of hospitality can never be denied. They ushered us to our tent (UN) for the men and a newly constructed room for the ladies. After we had ourselves refreshed we went to the City Government Building of Tacloban and then to the Provicial Capitol Building of the Province of Leyte we prayed for the local government of the province.
It was dark when we returned to our camp and prepare ourselves for tomorrow’s activities.
We prayed, planned out and repacked the goods coming from our donors back in Bacolod City and around the world.

Tuesday February 18, 2014, the team was found praying as we start the day
Dedicating every bit of the operations to the glory and fame of the Lord Jesus, we asked the Holy Spirits guidance for each and every one as we minister. Our tour around the city is not yet finished, we went to some important places in the province like the San Juanico Bridge, McArthur Park and the Tacloban Airport. Aside from this places you can see the work that needs to be finished, recovery stage is far from done. But the city is slowly rising from its fall. After this touring we went back at the camp to meet with the barangay officials of 54-A. The team we’re divided to two groups to conduct a priority survey on which households requires much number of roofing materials.
Kagawads and other social workers led us to the houses around the barangay.
There are some houses that are partially damaged but most of which is totaled. A lot of stories has been told to us, how they survived, the decisions they did, and the emotions that burst during our house to house visit if still fresh from the survivors experience. We really can’t tell which of the households need much roof because the surrounding community is totally damage, writing all the families that need attention we decided.
After the ocular check-up of the adopted barangay, we went around the city and visited three campuses and prayed for the University of the Philippines, Asian Development Foundation College and Eastern Visayas State University declaring Jesus’ redemption will come with no delay.
The team of Pastor Canas’ accommodation is incomparably humble. United as the light and salt of this earth, by 2pm of the afternoon people started to fill the place before the distribution of the roofing materials and other goods the barangay council made sure that people who are coming are from the same barangay.
Ian Cabalatungan of Cebu City shared the word of salvation using EVANGECUBE which were responded by many as the call for salvation in Jesus Christ was called. Heart-drowning sight, seeing people raised their hands knowing that there is still hope and that hope found only in Jesus. The people then were consolidated by filling-up the forms and was filed by the team for future contacts and endorsement to Pastor Jun’s pastoring. The families present in the operations lined up with a specific number of roofing materials they need -- some for 5, 12, and 18 SHEETS depending on the need of a certain family. Almost 160 families where blessed with roofing materials. Some people from other barangay wondered if the roofing materials that were provided is given by the government.
In the coastal stretch of the neighboring barangays which the relief operations of His Life Ministries powered by Jesus was provided was the first construction materials that were provided for a community.
Smile beamed around as they received their share. The team did not have a hard time with the distributions because the people themselves were disciplined. The Barangay Captain of 54-A thanked the team for their effort of reaching them in a special way. It was a day full of rejoicing coming from the salvation of the souls in Jesus and the smiles that were seen in the families and individual whom even they’ve lost their loved ones, their shelter and lost almost everything they manage to say “thank You Lord.”
The team had a very fulfilling day, giving back all the glory and honor to God alone for everything He has done for not only for the people but also for us who ministered. The honor of serving the Lord is incomparable. The team together with Pastor Jun and family went on a dinner celebrations in one of the restaurants in the city. We also met a friend from VCF Tacloban which is also a friend of Richie Rondez in Tacloban, we shared insights of what is the culture of the youth in Tacloban and build an investment of contact in the future mission trip of HLM. With joy and peace in our heart we rested the night in His presence.

Wednesday February 19, 2014 the scheduled date of our departure.  The team of Pastor Jun prepared for us a pasalabong of “binagol” one of the local delicacies of the city together with the t-shirts saying “I love Tacloban” was given as a token of thanks to the team. We hurriedly grab a photo with our t-shirts on together with Pastor Jun and his wife. The exchanged of good byes where all around from the kids to the senior people we extended our thanks to them for allowing us to minister to them, encouraging them to put their full hope in the Lord Jesus. The team prayed for Pastor Jun’s family and ministry in continually reaching and discipling the city for the Lord. We were brought to bus terminal catching up with our itinerary the smiles that bid us good byes giving them our response “we shall return.”

[as of February 19, 2014, reported by Arjay Geven]
The team motivated with the purpose of blessing the people of Tacloban, declaring the hope found only in Jesus Christ.  We started the day with a prayer.  We continued to tour around the city seeing the etent of the damage, praying for every establishment that we can see especially campuses like:  University of the Philippines, Eastern Visayas State University and Asian Development Foundation College, declaring fertile ground for the gospel to be planted in the hearts of the students.  The accommodation of Pastor Jun Canas and his team are exceptional.  Our hearts united being the light and salt.  We informed the people of the Barangay 54-A at 10am by doing a house to house priority inspection of those families who needed roofing materials.  By 2pm Ian Cabalatungan (our Cebu pastor)  shared the Word and called for salvation which some of the people who came responded, afterwards smiles beamed with words saying "thank You Lord" can be heard everywhere.  A day worth remembering, giving back the honor and glory to God alone.

=============

A RESPONSE to the TACLOBAN and NEIGHBORING islands in CRISIS.
Our EMERGENCY MEETING [November 12, 2013] with our STAFF and SITE PASTORS yielded the following with a RESOLUTE HEART and SPIRIT.

YES we will be HELPING, and GIVING UP MANY things for this ONE THING!
EVEN RAISING UP A MILLION or MORE (through our THANKSGIVING GIFTS 2013).
We will also invite others to join in this spiritual fray.

We have divided our RESPONSE in TWO DIFFERENT WAYS:

1
TO GIVE "RELIEF" immediately!
And

2
TO ALSO "BUILD" some of the things that were lost due to the typhoon, we will call this “RESTORATION”.

AS OF THE MOMENT, MANY HAVE LINKED WITH US IN DOING SUCH AN ENDEAVOR.
One of our brother (SUNNY DIOSANA) will be back from HAITI to voluntarily LEAD THE TEAM and ALL THE RESOURCES WE MAY MUSTER.

SOME TIPS / GUIDELINES … GOT THIS FROM A SISTER ABROAD with some additions ... as you HELP OUT ... KEEP IN MIND.
They are asking for: Shoes Trapal / COVERING / TENT Ready to eat food. SUPER Cookies and ETC Flashlights and batteries To everyone who is actively participating in packing relief goods to be sent to the EXTREMELY DEVASTATED areas like LEYTE and such, please note the following:
1.) PACK MEDICINE - most especially basic medicine (biogesic, bioflu, robitussin etc). Also if possible, include medicine for surface wounds as many have been wounded because of the debris and fallen rooftops.
2.) PACK AT LEAST ONE BOTTLE OF WATER. People are raging for water (some have even become violent just for water). There is no source of water at all in any part of Tacloban.
3.) PACK CANDLES AND MATCHES - there will be no electricity for a minimum of two months so all people will need these.
4.) ENCOURAGE YOUR RESPECTIVE GROUP/ORGANIZATION TO DONATE BODYBAGS. Bodies are lying around the roads within the city and some of the places have already been filled up with bodies. NOTE: DO NOT PACK NOODLES, RICE OR ANYTHING THAT NEEDS WATER. There is no water and electricity so it is impossible to cook this kind of food. Stick to bread, canned goods that are ready-to-eat and can be opened WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A CAN OPENER. (ALTHOUGH FILIPINOS ARE VERY RESOURCEFUL PEOPLE)

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
As we receive all THE GOODS and GIFTS you will be SENDING, we are dividing it into RELIEF (THE NOW) and RESTORATION (THE NEXT) ... then RELATIONSHIPS (sharing the Word of God and building communities of faith).

RELIEF >>>>> includes FOOD, WATER, BLANKETS, MEDICINES, SLIPPERS, SHOES, PAMPERS for kids, etc.

While RESTORATION >>>>> includes a plan to build a CLINIC, some HOMES / HOUSES / SHELTERS in a specific areas / baranggay, and more ....

AS OF NOW all gifts collected for TACLOBAN will be IMMEDIATELY sent to BROTHER ROCKY PARCON and TEAM (some of them are NOW in ORMOC and may reach LEYTE in a 2 hour travel by land), this TEAM comes from CEBU CITY; THEN for NORTHERN PANAY, all gifts will be coursed to BROTHER REY DEL ROSARIO and TEAM – they are in PANAY AREA at this time. THEN for SAGAY CITY, NORTHERN NEGROS, it will be immediately sent to BROTHER JONAS CUBING (Sagay is only a 2 hour drive from BACOLOD CITY);  while for CADIZ (through Brother Jay Ramos).

NOTE:
RESTORATION EFFORTS begin DECEMBER 2nd week (DECEMBER 10, 11, 12, on so on) as we LITERALLY SEND A TEAM headed by BROTHER SUNNY DIOSANA (he has more than 5 INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES in community development / infrastructure -- ACHE INDONESIA; SUDAN ... to mention).

THIS entails 1 to 2 million pesos or more of GIFTS WE MAY DONATE TO BUILD a CLINIC,
restore some HOUSES (of at least 10 to 12 families) ... etc.
